STRIP DISTRICT. One of the most rockin' joints in the Strip District, 31st Street Pub books nothing but hard, shoot-straight-from-the-hip acts who play loud, cutting-edge tunes. Indeed, obscenities and ear plugs are likely cohorts at this music-first bar, where the walls are adorned with seemingly countless band stickers. All Monday through Wednesday shows begin at 10pm; Thursday through Saturday shows begin at 10:30pm. Check the club's calendar for upcoming bands.

SOUTH SIDE. Bar 11 is a nice little hole-in-the-wall located off the beaten path, and its main draw is a fun-loving atmosphere. Drinks come with toy-like tops, water guns, and miscellaneous plastic goodies. Also, highlighters are freely passed around so that you can write on your fellow patrons ­ don't wear white if you value your clothing. If you don't mind being a little crowded, the $3 cover is well worth the fun.

SOUTH SIDE. With extensive draft and bottled beer options, local art work and live music, the BBT sits tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the South Side. Although it may sound trite, the BBT is the kind of bar where everyone really does know your name, or if they don't, they'll learn it quickly. Maybe it's the exposed brick and mellow lighting, or maybe it's the personalized service by bartender Jason "Jonesy" Jones ... whatever it is, you feel like you're settling in for a comfortable evening at home with your closest friends.

SHADYSIDE. Wander a couple blocks up Ellsworth Avenue from the UniMart and you'll encounter an oasis of barley and hops drinks and some darn good pizza, too. Bites 'n Brews offers exactly what it promises: a huge array of special brews and microbrews, along with a large selection of reasonably priced food. Get a slice bigger than your face for $3, or lay out about $20 for an entire gourmet wheat-crust combo pie.

BLOOMFIELD. Embrace the revelry and fun at this family-run Polish eatery and bar. Early in the evening, you'll see patrons devouring heaping plates of stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and pierogies, but as the night rolls in, tables disappear from the stage and live bands take the spotlight. Music ranges from folk and acoustic to alternative rock. On Thursday nights, $1 beers after 11pm are an additional draw.
