SHADYSIDE. With a menu featuring a seductive blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern specialties, Casbah rocks well into the evening. The wide-open space sparkles with ornate paintings and furniture, and lattice window covers dignify the interior with a feeling of exclusivity and separation from the outside bustle. Couscous and lentils with shrimp tease out a surprisingly full flavor without the heaviness of beef or lamb tainting palate and wallet.

STRIP DISRICT. This small restaurant with seating for about 30 is very popular, so reservations are a must. The fare is Italian, with favorites such as double-cut veal chop and several fish dishes. The space tends to be very cozy, and the service friendly.

SOUTH SIDE. The menu tells of Tessie Mae Hullficker, a woman who turned the family service station into a restaurant to serve her favorite TV dinners and BBQ. The Double Wide Grill does have a "TV dinner" served on a metal, divided tray, but don't be fooled, the food is nothing like microwave dinners. On weekends, for example, their brunch offerings include the mammoth-size Trucker Breakfast (two eggs, meat and home fries) as well as huevos rancheros, steak & eggs and the self-explanatory Large Stack O Pancakes.

STATION SQUARE. This historic landmark was once the P&LE Railroad Station, and now offers some of Pittsburgh's best dining with a view. The main room, with grand arched ceiling, is inspiring and usually reverberates with chit-chatty diners. There are also several smaller (and quieter) rooms available. One is able to sit riverside with a good view of Downtown and Point Park. The menu is centered on seafood, as well as steaks and homemade pastas. Music regularly. A must while in Pittsburgh!

BLOOMFIELD. In the heart of Bloomfield (Pittsburgh's version of Little Italy) sits a small, red-awninged storefront that serves homemade gelati and panini. Italian-Americans, hipsters, and just about everyone else stops in for shots of espresso in the morning and then again later in the day for Italian ice creams. On Saturdays, Grasso Roberto serves one of the best brunches in town: fresh Italian pastries, eggs, sausages, fruit, potatoes, and a signature pasta dish with basil and ricotta cheese.
